The Moxie Chicks are all long-time members of Milwaukee’s acoustic music scene, having met each other at coffeehouses, music parties, and providing back-up work on various recording projects. Their musical motto is “Sweet harmony with an attitude!” and their swinging three-part harmony vocals liven up a wide variety of original, traditional, classic, and contemporary songs. In addition to their own compositions, the Moxie Chicks perform songs by the likes of Hank Williams, Gillian Welch, the Beatles, Paul Simon, Carole King, John Gorka, and Crosby Stills Nash & Young, as well as songs from other Milwaukee area songwriters.
David has been called "a gentle troubadour" and "elemental folksinger". His music is inspired by his voyages across Midwestern prairies and the waters of the Great Lakes. He has performed for more than twenty-five years in a wide variety of art forms for all ages.
Drew Nelson has the ability to write with conviction about the struggles of working people, the miner, the farmer, the steel plant worker, just trying to get by. Songs touch on his participation in Native American life and culture (“Grandmother Moon,” “Raindance”). The production is smart, and Drew's voice is warm and weathered. His songs move like the river under ice. Drew grew up in Michigan, but escaped the narrow confines of a small-town upbringing by joining the Navy and traveling the world. He came home with fresh eyes to appreciate the realities of life in America. These experiences provided insight and understanding that find an outlet in songs filled with discovery, revelation, and hope. Drew has just finished making his first guitar, and hopes to start a tradition of building and signing one a year to auction off for charity. In addition to giving back through his music, he is involved in many community-based efforts to educate the next generation; to make our world a better place to live. Drew Nelson is an authentic voice of community and renewal - join us!
Larry Penn is a masterful songwriter – entertaining folks with his music, poetry, and art for over three decades. His acute sense of imagery comes through in his music and stories of people and hard work, trains, trucks, love, and life on the road. A native of Milwaukee, Larry is famous among folk singers and has a longtime following in the U.S. He has toured with Utah Phillips and The Rose Tattoo, a group of amazing hobos, anarchists, and musicians - singing and telling stories which celebrate the ongoing influence of the railroads in American folk culture.
